2016 Resolutions

A new year and a new set of goals/resolutions.  As with previous years, I am trying to set reasonable goals, but also trying to challenge myself to be a better person and do the things that make me happy.  See below for my list of things that may or may not get accomplished in 2016…

Most years this one is unspoken in my mind, but I always want to write more.  This time I am adding it to the official list in the hopes that I will make it happen.  Writing more than last year should not be too hard to accomplish, considering my complete lack thereof.

A little bit different from the standard “diet” resolution.  Much of my day is filled with semi-healthy food (which can be very tiring day after day), but in the evening I usually have a beer or a glass of wine.  With a trip to Hawaii planned for July, limiting the empty calories seems like a great way to start losing a few pounds to be ready for that swimsuit.  Not that I expect to be bikini ready by any means, but I hope to fit into the swimsuits that I bought for the Bahamas trip back in 2010.

Since moving and going back to work, I have spent very VERY little time outside.  Now that we live somewhere that actually has winter, although you would never know it by how mild the winter has been so far, I feel like I should make more of an effort to get my vitamin D while I can.  The kids also love running around outside, which means that they nap better and sleep better at night.  Win, win in my mind.  I just need to remember the sunblock so that I don’t get a burn…

I have a nice new camera, and a brand new lense that I got for Xmas, so I need to be using it.  I love taking pictures, but I am not fast enough for those candid moments most of the time.  I know that will only get better with practice, so this year I want to practice with my camera more.  But the challenge will really be to get a few pictures, and then put the camera away so that I can enjoy the moment with my kids.  I see many photographers taking pictures of their family when all their kids want them to do is stop and come play with them.

This past year has very few pictures with me in them.  Primarily that is because I am the one taking the picture, but it is also because I don’t tell J to “take an effing picture already” to gently remind him that the kids might like to see pictures of both parents someday.  😉  Being in the picture will also help me train myself to be more photogenic, or at least not quite as horrible at looking decent in a picture.

2015 Resolution Recap

It is that time of year again.  Time for me to look at how well I did on my resolutions for 2015 and think about my resolutions for the upcoming year.  I think I did pretty good considering all of the major changes and challenges that came up unexpectedly during the year.  Working again has really changed my priorities for resolutions and I am expecting my list for next year to me very different.

IMG_20140817_134737Well, I guess I can say that this one was a partial success.  We de-cluttered a lot during our cross-country move, but not as much as I would like.  Getting a job has greatly reduced the number of “clutter activities” that I have time for; like doing dishes, making cookies, or watching TV.  I feel good about the progress that I have made towards this goal, but I could have done a lot more.

This one is going into the FAIL box.  I started off the year good, working on cooking more and having more veggies, but then I went back to work.  Working again has messed up our whole family schedule and we haven’t recovered yet.

Another resolution that was working out great until I went back to work.  I was making cookies on a regular basis and sending them to J’s office (much to the delight of his coworkers), but with a new schedule comes less time to bake.  Point in fact, I made cookies for Santa but only got 1/4 of them frosted due to being hit with a stomach bug the next day.  So I have 4 dozen unfrosted sugar cookies in the freezer right now and zero motivation to finish them at the moment.

This is another resolution that I will count as half complete.  While I now have less time to play, I am more present and willing to stop cleaning when I have the chance.  Playing Legos is ALWAYS better than folding laundry!

I can’t really say that this one has been successful, but I also cannot say that it has failed.  I spent the first half of the year staying home with the kids, making items for my shop, making cookies, and other fun projects.  The second half of the year I have been making holiday cards for my friends, making items not to sell, but for myself, and working full time and using my science skills that were underutilized previously.  There is just not enough hours in the day to do what I want and what I need to.  I think the biggest drain of joy in my life is the stage that the kids are in right now.  I find that I do not have the patience, nor the grace, to deal with potty training, the effing fours, and the terrible twos all at once.  Parenting is hard.  (If you haven’t read it yet, I recommend reading All Joy and No Fun.)  The kids are also the biggest source of joy in my life, so it is quite a conundrum in my daily life.

2015 Resolutions

It is that time of year again.  The time to start thinking about everything in your life that you want to change.  As much as I would like to go to the gym or take a Photoshop class as part of my resolutions, both of those require money that I do not have laying around right now.  Ah, the joy of being a stay at home mom!  So, part of my goal for next year is to get a job that I actually like or to get my ETSY shop making enough money to have that be my job.  Neither of those made it to my resolution list, though.  Here are my slightly vague, setting the bar low, resolutions for 2015.

IMG_20140817_134737I know this is vague, and a picture of neatly folded laundry doesn’t look very cluttered, but there are so many clothes there.  So very many clothes.  L has a drawer that is FULL of shirts, most of which he doesn’t even wear.  Our house looks like Toys R Us threw up in it on any given day.  My closet is filled with clothes that I would like to fit back into someday… hopefully…  So, my resolution is to get rid of some of the crap that is cluttering my life.  How do I measure this, you may be asking.  Well, I haven’t quite figured that part out yet (quote from Will Scarlet in Robin Hood: Men in Tights).

This past year has been filled with WAY TOO MUCH fast food.  We were doing good with cooking meals when I was getting Blue Apron boxes every week, but when I quit my job, I had to cut that cost out.  Now, we are running to Jack in the Box all too often after the kids are finally asleep (9 pm).  I have tried to cook at home, but with R being uber clingy and L being crazy after being at preschool all day, neither kid has let me even get a pot of water on the stove most evenings.  So, I am going to be looking for (and probably blogging about) healthy and most importantly fast recipes that I can make on the weekday evenings.  It also helps that I have a contest going with some friends on who can lose the most weight in 8 weeks.  Maybe that will kickstart my healthy eating?

At the end of this year, I dipped my toes into the world of royal icing and fell in love with it.  I also received a beautiful new mixer and many tools to continue my new hobby.  So, I intend to put those to good use!  Speaking of, I have cookie dough in the fridge right now, waiting to be made into cute woodland creature cookies.  Oh, and fair warning to any of J’s coworkers that read my blog, he WILL be bringing cookies into work.  I am going to be making cookies, but if I am going to keep the previous resolution, I need to get them out of the house as soon as they are done.  My philosophy is: If one cookie is good, eight are better.  So, out of my sight means not in my belly.

I find that whenever I have a free moment, I end up folding laundry or vacuuming the carpet or just picking up some of the clutter that is everywhere.  I rarely just sit and play with the kids.  I can do a project with them, but if I am asked to wait while L cooks dinner for me in his kitchen, I find myself cleaning or checking my email or doing anything except being in the moment with him.  So, one more resolution is to play with the kids more.  Be in the moment and just play.  Try not to think about all the other things I need to be doing to keep the house running.  Just play.

I seem to have lost it somewhere between growing up and feeling old.  Uncaring bosses and screaming kids have sucked the joy right out of me.  This past year, the few things that I have found happiness in doing, have had the joy taken out of them by someone else.  So, I am going to keep looking for things that I can find joy in doing/making/being.  I am going to do those things that make me happy and eff anyone that has issues with it.  I am a Maker.  I find joy in making beautiful things.  (I am good at it too)  So, I am going to focus more on doing those things that bring the joy back into my life and avoid the things (and people) that take it away.  Just looking at the picture of R, so happy, makes me more determined to make this goal happen.  I want my kids to remember me as a happy person, not someone that has been run over and depressed by life.

2014 Resolution Recap

Time for my yearly look back at how badly I failed at my resolutions for the past year.  Not being negative, just realistic. 😉  I set the bar low this past year, knowing that I would have some major changes in my life; I did not set the bar quite low enough, though.

Blog More
First up was to blog more.  59 posts published in 2014 compared to 45 posts published in 2013.  I would say that this resolution was a success  I set the bar pretty low on this one, but it was an achievable goal.  Having 2 kids has really made it difficult to find time to write coherently; nap time is usually reserved for laundry, cleaning, and coffee.  This year, I also feel like I had much less to say in general.  So much of my day is taken up with the small difficulties of being a mom that I don’t have anything to say outside of that.

Eat More Family Meals
Technically, we did this one, but not as well as I was hoping to.  Once R was here, it was much more difficult to sit down for a meal than I expected.  Now that things are getting into more of a routine, we end up feeding the kids together around 5 pm and J and I eat together after the kids go to bed.  One or both of us always sit with the kids while they eat so I am going to count that as a family meal.  I hope that with R eating more solid food, we can get better with this as the new year evolves.

Write Thank You Notes
Christmas thank you notes are still pending, but I actually did this one. I wrote thank you notes for L’s birthday gifts and for the baby shower gifts that I received for R.  I am also in the process of writing them for all of the Christmas gifts we received.  I did miss on writing them for my birthday, but that just gives me room for improvement for next year.

Re-Read Books
This is one that I was able to do as well, but not as much as I was hoping to. I read 3 old books for every new book that I bought, but I did not hit the 5 old books per 1 new book that I was aiming for.  Over the past year, I have become addicted to my Nook.  I now do not like reading paper books if I can help it.  As much as I would like to keep reading paper books, if only for the vintage appeal of it, I cannot ignore the benefits of eReaders any longer.  Light included with the book, not as heavy as a real book, easier to hold, and much easier to find the next book in a series (and way too easy to buy a new book with the click of a button).

Go To 10 New Places
I failed abysmally at this goal.  I will use the excuse of having a new baby in the house as my reason for not going to new places.  We did go to quite a few places, which were new to R, but not many were new to all of us.  The few new places we went to were

  1. San Jose Ramen Festival
  2. Parts of Las Vegas – namely some very nice resteraunts
  3. L went to Tatum’s Garden with his grandparents
  4. L and R went to San Francisco for the first time for my 4th Trimester Bodies photo shoot

So, in the end, I would say that I made a solid B effort on completing the resolutions.  I am hoping too either set the bar lower this next year or to make an A+ effort towards getting the resolutions completed.  Considering how much I already have on my plate, I think I will be setting the bar very, very low.

2014 Resolutions

Well, here we go.  It is time for another list of things that I am going to try to do this year.  I hope that I am being realistic this year and making my goals acheivable, but I guess only time will tell.  5 goals seemed like a good number from last year, so that is what I am going with again this year.  Wish me luck!

 

Blog More

Isn't this a required resolution for every blogger?  If you blog enough, don't you want to improve your writting or comunity or something?  So, this year, instead of putting a set number of required posts to this resolution, I am just going to leave it as an ephereal "more".  With a baby on the way, I don't know how much time I am going to have to blog, but if I do even one more post this year, over last year, I will consider this a win.  I would like to do more, but as I remember from L's newborn stage, setting the bar low is essential to maintaining my sanity.

 

Eat More Family Meals

I think this is going to be something that I struggle with for years to come.  L eats dinner at 5:30 when J picks him up from daycare.  I get home at 6:30 and I play with L for an hour before the bedtime routine starts.  L is in bed by 8 and then J and I make and eat our usually unhealthy yet fast dinner.  I would love to have a family dinner night in the future, but as long as L demands food before I get home, I don't foresee that in the future.  So for this goal, I am going to focus on weekend meals.  Eating even a sandwich for lunch, all of us together.  Most days it is just easier to feel L and then J and I eat later (if at all), but we need to work on L's eating habits.  He needs to learn to be more patient at the table and let other people eat their food too.  A tall order for a 2.5 year old, but I think he has the capability within him.

 

Write Thank You Notes

I was horrible at writting thank you notes in 2013.  I wrote them for Christmas the year before, and then the notes just kept piling up on the desk.  I never even got L's birthday thank you's written and sent out.  A bummer because they were really cute, in my opinion.  So this year, I want to write thank you's for Christmas, L's birthday, any baby gifts I get, and my birthday.  J can write his own birthday thank yous.

 

Re-Read Books

I have been horrid about this recently.  I used to pride myself on how I could re-read so many of my books and enjoy them just as much the 2nd, 3rd, or even 5th time around.  Some books I have read more than 15 times!  Unfortunately, with the purchase of my Nook, I am too easily able to just buy a new book with the tap of a finger.  No credit card to enter because it is stored in there, no sales people to deal with, and no negotiating with J about how many books we can afford for me to buy.  I hesitate to determine how -much I have spent on books in 2013; I already know it is too much.  So in 2014 I am going to re-read more books.  I am going to re-read a minimum of 3 books for every 1 that I purchase.  Well, that was my goal at first but I think I need to change it to a 5:1 ratio.  I have already re-read 2 books and it is only 9 days into the new year…

 

Go To 10 New PlacesI liked this resolution so much from last year that I am putting it in this year again.  This time, I hope to have less cop-out locations (like parks) on the list and more real ones.  With 2 kids I think this will be a real challenge for me.  I am already planning on taking L to the Tech Museum, the Children's Discovery Museum, and maybe (strong maybe) to his first movie.  Other than those two, I don't have anything new planned as of yet.  I am hoping that I will be inspired as the year progresses.

2013 Resolution Recap

It is that time of year again; time to make resolutions that will never be completed.  Before I jump into making mine for 2014, I wanted to have a quick recap of how the ones from 2013 worked out.

IMG_20121127_085725I am going to call this goal a partial success.  While we did not actually spend more time together, I feel that the time that we are spending together is of a higher quality.  Now that we know there is another minion coming to our family, each day with just the three of us seems even more precious.  This is another goal that is going to roll into next year with one slight change (you can see the change when I post my 2014 resolutions/goals).

20121103 - breakfastThis goal frankly did not happen so much.  With work being even busier than before, it was impossible for us to all sit down together for meals; even on the weekend it was a challenge.  I am going to carry this resolution forward to this year.  I think this is a goal that I will always have and always need to work on.

IMG_20120809_195502We actually did get better at this!  While our kitchen is nowhere near spotless 95% of the time, we did hire someone to come and clean for us every other week.  This cleaning has required us to have dishes done completely at least that often.  Win!

IMG_0634We tried to take L to 10 new places this year, but we were not able to meet that goal.  We did manage to visit 10 new places among the three of us, so I am going to count that as a goal completed.

1 – Happy Hollow Park and Zoo – L absolutely loved going here. There was a petting zoo where he got to feed the goats, a few different animal exhibits, and some small rides for young children.  One ride had police cars and fire trucks going in a circle; there was a major tantrum when he had to get off of that ride.

2 – Gilroy Gardens – I took L here on a playdate while J was in Singapore this year.  This park had more rides for kids that were slightly older, but they still had the fire trucks going in a circle ride (a must have for my child).  I enjoyed getting to look at the gardens where J and I were married 8 years ago.

3 – Park with the Fire Truck – In our home town, there are a few different parks that we take L to.  We try to change it up every few months by taking him to a park that he has never been to or we don’t visit very often.  This year we took him to a park that is part of an elementary school which has a metal frame designed to look like a fire truck.  (Can you see the theme in L’s interests?)

4 – Morgan Hill Community Park – We all went to this park to meet one of my mom friends from the BabyCenter forums.  It was my first IRL meeting of someone from our group of moms who had kids in July 2011.  L was pretty shy at first, but after a few minutes he warmed right up to the other little boy.  They bonded over the steering wheels on the play structure.

5 – Sundial Bridge – This year we celebrated Christmas up in Northern California with some of J’s family.  On Christmas Eve, after our traditional lunch at Sierra Nevada Brewery, we took L to the Sundial Bridge in Redding, CA.  He had so much fun running across it with his cousins!

6 – Napa Valley – J and I had our first weekend getaway in the beginning of the year up to Napa.  It was so nice and relaxing to spend some time reconnecting as a couple and wine tasting without children present.  A big thank you to my parents for babysitting L while we were gone too!

7 – Pulau Ubin – When J went to Singapore this past year, they actually had some free time for touring.  The group decided to take a bike tour of Pulau Ubin while they were there (next time J will remember to bring shoes for biking, flip flops don’t cut it).

8 – North Carolina – For work I traveled to North Carolina to visit one of our other plants for testing.  It was fun to see the South again and all of the green, green trees covering the hills.  I hope to travel there more in the future.

9 – UC Davis – Another trip that I took for work is to UC Davis for a workshop this past fall.  They have a beautiful campus and a town that is extremely friendly to bicycles (the bicyclists are not very friendly to pedestrians though).

10 – Santa Cruz Boardwalk – While we did not get to do a full tour of the Boardwalk this year (it was closed for the winter), we did get to ride the Holiday Lights Train that departs from there.  L loved riding the train, and while I did not think the scenery was the most beautiful, he enjoyed seeing the garbage trucks, cement trucks, and fire trucks that can be seen in the pseudo-industrial section of Santa Cruz.

IMG_20121028_123851This is a hard goal to measure in terms of success.  We are now taking L to the Little Gym for classes every week, which expands his horizons quite a bit.  It also gets us to interact with other parents.  J is getting the garage set up for some home improvement projects that have been on his to-do list for years now.  I am also reconnecting with my crafty self and trying to do more projects at home rather than buy things.  I think that we all have worked on adding more to our lives outside of the work-play-sleep routine that we have been stuck in.

All in all, I could have done worse. I could have done a lot better too, but I think this was a decent level of achievement for my resolutions. Now, I have to make my list for this year. That is quite a daunting prospect when you think of how much we have already happening in 2014. :)

2013 Resolutions

I have decided to put aside my skepticism and try this whole resolution thing.  I don’t know if it will work for me, but hopefully by putting them out there for the world to see, I will feel a tiny bit more accountable for them.  So without further ado, my 2013 resolutions!

IMG_20121127_085725This is the most important resolution to me, and therefore is at the top of the list.  I don’t know how I will make it work, with my commute and long work hours, but I am going to do my best.  I never planned on being a mother, but I am one now and I don’t want to be mediocre!

20121103 - breakfastThis goes right along with the previous one and has the same roadblocks.  Even if we do not have family dinner together on weeknights, there is no reason that we can’t have more meals together on the weekends.  Another part of this one is to cook more at home.  I feel guilty about how much pre-prepared food that we eat in our house.  I hate cooking and I rarely do cook, but I think I can take on weekend cooking duties in an effort to make this happen.

IMG_20120809_195502Our main excuse for not cooking a family meal.  We need to get over our hatred of doing the dishes.  These are my resolutions  but this one has a very strong WE attached to it.  I really hate doing the dishes, and so does J, so we need to work together and find solidarity in our misery.  Seriously, I cannot describe my hatred of doing the dishes.  Cleaning the bathroom is more tolerable.

IMG_0634Last year we took L to most of the common places to visit in our area and we found that he did not care all that much about them.  He was 1, I can’t really blame him.  Now that he is a smidge older, we can start to take him to places and teach him about new things.  I am already planning on going to the petting zoo, a children’s museum, and a small amusement park that has toddler friendly rides.  I want him to have experiences outside of home and daycare.  If I can not spend much time with my family, I want it to be quality time where we make memories together.

IMG_20121028_123851And finally, to get out of my daily rut-tine.  This could manifest as a mental expansion or a physical one (hopefully not one of my waistline).  As part of this one, I am resolved to blog every day.  I have been able to for the first 5 days of this year *high-five to me* and I feel good about making it through the month successfully.

There are my resolutions.  I will keep you (if there is anyone there . . . Bueller?) posted on how it is going.  I could make a much longer list, but I think 5 are plenty for me, a resolution rookie.
